Missional Awareness Series: What is Appalachian Regional Ministry?

Appalachian Mission | Southern West Virginia Missions Trip Missional awareness starts with learning about the ministries and missions that we partner with and support at First Southern Baptist Church of Grandview.

Appalachian Regional Ministry (ARM) is a Ministry of the North American Mission Board. ARM mobilizes Southern Baptists and their resources to provide ministries, evangelize the lost, assist existing churches and start new churches in the 12 states that include Appalachia.

Why Appalachia? The region’s original blend of immigrant cultures has become a distinct, rich culture of its own that goes far beyond the beauty of the surroundings. It also is one of extreme poverty having 37 of the 100 poorest counties in the United States. And while religion is important in Appalachia, the reality is that more than 70 percent of the region is unchurched with some counties as high as 90 percent unchurched. Appalachian Regional Ministr works in cooperation with state conventions, associations and churches throughout the region. Their goal is to help churches make a profound impact in Appalachia.

Our missionary contact for ARM is Dr. Bill Barker. Dr. Barker has been such a blessing to our church throughout his time serving with Appalachian Regional Ministry. He has taught us about missions and ministry and connected us with Missions Groups to work on our church building and to work along side us in our communities. We are thankful for this partnership we have through Applachian Regional Ministries.

ARM is partnering with us to provide backpacks for LoveLoud Christmas Backpacks!
